When and how can you see the rock carvings in Tanum's World Heritage Site?

The rock carvings that are accessible for visitors are accessible around the clock, all year round. It is free to visit the World Heritage Site's rock carvings.

Entrance information

  • Day ticket: 70 SEK
  • Annual pass: 140 SEK
  • Annual pass for pensioners: 120 SEK
  • Children, youth under 20 years and students (holders of a student ID card): free admission

For Vitlycke Museum: Increased entrance fee during high season (23/6–31/8):  Adult day ticket 120 SEK – includes a guided tour.

Unless otherwise stated in connection with an activity, it is included in the day ticket or annual pass.

Annual pass

With the annual pass, you can visit our museums; Forsviks brukGothenburg Museum of Natural HistoryLödöse museumMedical History MuseumVitlycke museum and Vänersborgs museum throughout the calendar year. The pass is valid from the date of purchase until the end of the year. A special fee may apply to certain exhibitions and program points. The annual pass is a personal, valuable document that can be renewed each year.

Pensioner

Pensioners (applies to those aged 65 and over) can purchase a discounted annual pass for 120 SEK upon presentation of ID. Also applicable to early retirees upon presentation of a card.

In the beautiful building at Vitlycke museum, you find The Rock Art Shop that offers a great variety of thoughtful products with sense for history.

We have let the 3000-year-old art of rock carvings inspire to crafts and products with sustainable materials and quality as our focus.

The shop is cash free

We accept payment by card.

In our shop you will find jewellery, textiles, ceramics and glass with historical connection, but also contemporary design from well known brands. You will also find books about archaeology, the bronze age, cultivation of the land, geology, crafts and children’s books. We have literature in many languages and we that work here are multilingual. Some of our products are made with old techniques and are specially designed for us. Local producers and designers are also represented in the shop.

When you shop in our store you are supporting Vitlycke museum.

The shop has the same opening hours as the museum.

Getting here by car

Take exit 105 on the E6 towards Tanumshede. Then follow the signs at the Tanum church.

Getting here by public transport

You can get to Tanumshede either by bus or train. The buses stop in central Tanumshede (three kilometers from the museum) and at Tanum Shoppingcenter (2,5 kilometers from the museum). The trains at the Tanumshede rail way station, five kilometers from the museum. The bus stop closest to Vitlycke museum is called Hoghem, 500 meters from the museum. Follow the road westward from the bus stop, past the Tanum camping, to the museum.

Accessibility

Vitlycke Museum is also the visitor centre for the Tanum rock carvings, a World Heritage Site. To see the rock carvings in the Tanum World Heritage area, visitors must travel to various outdoor locations themselves. This section is about the accessibility at Vitlycke Museum. Visiting Vitlycke Museum

To avoid using steps, you can drive up to the main entrance of the museum. Drive towards the long side of the museum and turn left up the gravel slope to drop off passengers. Another option is to use the lift: contact reception and they will open it on the long side of the museum: Phone: +46 (0)10-441 43 10.

  • The museum has four toilets, one of which is spacious and adapted for wheelchair users. 
  • A wheelchair is available at the cloakroom if you wish to borrow one.
  • The museum has a café, shop and reception that also serves as an information centre.
  • There is an indoor exhibition showing life during the Bronze Age.

Vitlycke dog policy

Only guide dogs and assistance dogs are allowed inside Vitlycke Museum. Dogs are welcomed in all outdoor areas connected to Vitlycke Museum. Below you will find more information for visiting us with your dog.

Please note that all dogs must be leashed.

The Museum

Dogs are not allowed inside the museum, with the exception of guide dogs and assistance dogs. Out of consideration for those with allergies, only these dogs are permitted indoors.

The Bronze Age Farm

The Bronze Age Farm welcomes dogs. To visit this area, an entrance ticket to Vitlycke Museum is required.

Tickets

Please let your dog wait outside while you purchase your entrance ticket. The reception will inform you on how to proceed to the Bronze Age Farm.
